PASADENA (CBS) ? The city may still be working to clean up the debris left in the aftermath of some wicked winds last week, but some Pasadena business owners are profiting from the recent storm.
KNX 1070?s John Brooks reports insurance agents and auto body repair shops are among those who have seen a surge in business recently.
Nearly two weeks after a series of wind storms roared through the San Gabriel Valley, owners like Ron Baker of Baker?s Auto Body on East Walnut have seen their operation pushed to capacity.
And as wet weather makes its return to the Southland, Baker expects the rush to continue for some time.
?People always think that we get real busy when it rains because there?s more accidents, and there?s a few more accidents, but when there?s wind damage, there?s a lot more cars that are damaged from the wind than there is from accidents from the rain,? Baker said.
The majority of damage stems from trees falling onto vehicles, he added.
Dominique, an insurance appraiser with Mercury Insurance, has also seen her workload surge since the storm.
?We?re overwhelmed,? she said, adding that recent claims have ranged from ?anything from just a few minor scratches to 2,000-pound trees laying on vehicles and they?re smushed to the floor,? she said.
Hardware stores, lumber yards, hotels and motels in the region also reported a marked uptick in business while power was out for nearly five days to much of the city.
This is how business sees opposition. This is how business is done:
“In his forum called ‘Designing a Media Relations Strategy To Overcome Concerns Surrounding Hydraulic Fracturing,’? Range Resources communications director?Matt Pitzarella explains how to ‘overcome stakeholder concerns’ surrounding fracking.
‘We have several former psy ops folks that work for us at Range because they?re very comfortable in dealing with localized issues and local governments,’ Pitzarella said. ‘Really all they do is spend most of their time helping folks develop local ordinances and things like that. But very much having that understanding of psy ops in the Army and in the Middle East has applied very helpfully here for us in Pennsylvania.’
It was during Anadarko Petroleum’s manager of external affairs, Matt Carmichael’s, session on ‘Understanding How Unconventional Oil & Gas Operators are Developing a Comprehensive Media Relations Strategy to Engage Stakeholders and Educate the Public’ that he suggested his colleagues:
‘Download the U.S. Army-slash-Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Manual, because we are dealing with an insurgency,‘ Carmichael said. ‘There?s a lot of good lessons in there and coming from a military background, I found the insight in that extremely remarkable.’
To be clear on exactly what Carmichael meant when he said they’re ‘dealing with an insurgency’ we obtained a copy of the FM 3-24 ? the final edition of the 2006 Counterinsurgency manual provided to psy ops soldiers. We substituted the word government with corporation.
‘ … insurgency has been a common approach used by the weak to combat the strong. At the beginning of a conflict, insurgents have the strategic initiative … the insurgents generally initiate the war. They may strive to disguise their intentions, and the potential counter-insurgent will be at a great disadvantage until [corporate] leaders recognize that an insurgency exists and are able to determine its makeup and characteristics to facilitate a coordinated reaction.?
While the [corporation] prepares to respond, the insurgent is gaining strength and creating increasing disruptions throughout the state. The existing [corporation] normally has an initial advantage in resources, but that edge is counterbalanced by the requirement to maintain order. The insurgent succeeds by sowing chaos and disorder anywhere; the [corporation] fails unless it maintains order everywhere.’…”
The treatment of captive populations as either adherents (consumers) or potential guerrillas is not limited to the “bad” corporations. Banks, newspapers, defense contractors and oil companies may have hired the first ex-military experts in disinformation, population control and psychological warfare, but they won’t be the last. A permanent military devoted to endless warfare produces experts who generally leave service sometime before they die.
Doing business, even small business, requires mystification. Business is unfair. Always. Doing business means separating a person from the product of her labor, to her repeated disadvantage. Grocery chains, gas stations, restaurants, amusement companies, counseling practices, engineering firms – they all develop media relations departments once they pass a critical mass of wealth, market presence and accumulation.
Once a business is capable of moving the market, it reinforces this capability.
It begins to understand consumers -? or, patients and clients -? as potential traitors. As persons in need of loyalty and brand reinforcement.
This is, not incidentally, how the corporate press sees the rest of us as well. If you do not respond to their product as would a loyal consumer, you are treated as an insurgent, or potentially so. The larger portion of news output depends upon the treatment of the listener, viewer or reader as a person who might otherwise be hostile should the narrative fail
You, who are probably a producer of commodities or commoditized services, must act like a commodity yourself. As an item on shelf, dependable in its branding. That is the how the producers of news segments, ad campaigns and state propaganda understand you, us, the whole lot of competing captive populations. We are energy and wealth producing possessions with enough of a smattering of will to potentially resist, or to seek new conditions.
Considerable treasure and loot is budgeted towards getting us to “internalize” a consumptive form of obedience, to better prevent resistance which works.
You’ve learned about how Gandhi was a great man, no doubt. How his non-violence was like a kind of solar magic which enervated a nation. How India emerged from his spectral man-womb, perfectly formed from pure and noble protest, from the holy reception of British violence. That Gandhi gets taught in school. Gandhi the child fondler, the racist, the man who ordered his wife’s death by refusing her medicine, the guy who nearly starved himself to death to stop Congress Party from giving rights to the Untouchables – he doesn’t make it into the hagiographies, the history books, the school texts or the PBS retrospectives. The Real Gandhi makes Permissible Gandhi look like, um, propaganda*.
And like most of us who were fed this pig’s swill of educational and moral self-betrayal, you might not even be aware of the thousands and tens of thousands of Indians who sabotaged train tracks, burned out British and local police stations, assassinated officers and engaged in what is now commonly referred to as hateful, evil, immoral “terrorism.” They probably even vandalized park benches, broke windows and burned out collaborating businesses.
The real Gandhi, and the historical India are continuously elided, in favor of the non-violent Saint and his loyal millions of lightworking do-gooders.
“Gandhi-ji” good, actually hurting those with all the power and guns, bad. Bosses with smiles on their faces because the rube proles are waving placards and playing with poppets, good. Banks empty of customers because the lobby, designed to look like the interior of a temple, is on fire, bad.
Kind of like: Martin good, Malcolm bad.
Or: Obama cool and articulate, McKinney nappy haired craaaay-zee.
This “internalization” of self-defeating, action-limiting beliefs operates from within and without. Those people who fancy their selves as members of a resistance, but who have incorporated the over-class’s obeisances, mental obstructions, consensus mentality and rule making hierarchies into their memories operate from within a movement, constantly (if most likely, unconsciously) reinforcing the imposition of the masters’ rules and restrictions on conduct, reinforcing those pressures which are routinely applied from without. Those within a resistance, especially those most prone to propertarian convictions, will often attempt to assume ownership over the messaging, “optics” and moral fiber of that resistance, movement or protest. They will insist on decorum. They will demand a respect (a fetish, actually, but who’s nitpicking?) for property and its sacral functions, its usefulness, its value. It is important to them that the correct owners of the resistance be established. That it have the right brand. They are branded by the corporate and educational cultures which generally tend to produce them, and their pursuit of brand awareness, brand placement and brand protection reflects these facts.
They do the work of the ruling class, of course.
They are not alone in performing this task.
Huffington, Yahoo, MSNBC, CNN, the networks and FOX have run daily pieces on the precipitous state of Iran’s “nuclear ambitions” for the last week or so. We are being prepped for the possibility of one more expansion of the endless war to keep global, Western capitalism – managed from London, New York, Washington, Berlin, Paris and Rome – afloat atop a rising tide of manufactured Emergency and storyboarded crisis.
Emergency is the answer to insurgency. Crisis is the reaction to criticism.
This is now business as usual. Same as it ever was.

* – because Permissible Gandhi is fucking propaganda. Seriously, this fuck was a child fondling defender of forced chastity, female servitude, racial superiority and the hatefulgodsbedamned caste system. Also, it’s no hard task to draw a line of causation from Gandhi to Nehru to Gandhi to nuclear India.

I was thinking of writing about how my mom is a white collar worker (teacher) and my dad is a blue collar worker (owns his own construction business) and how that gives me the best of both worlds, how I?ve gotten the importance of an education from my mom while working with my dad has shown me how important a work ethic is and how sometimes you have to do shitty tasks to complete a job/project. Thanks in advance for any help!
A dvancements in computer technology have increased performance levels and productivity in businesses of all sizes. Increased data speeds and internet usage in conjunction with larger storage capacities and a diverse lineup of electronic devices have brought about a new era in networking capabilities. On the cutting edge of this technology is cloud computing.
What exactly is cloud computing? Through a service provider, cloud computing is a platform that acts as a remote data center where users can access files and software securely through a multitude of devices wherever there is internet access. It is a solution for businesses and individuals looking for an easy way to store and access media from one device to another and the ability to share that media with other people who have been given access.
The cloud computing network may seem complicated, but it can be used by anyone. It is not necessary for the end user to understand the complexities of the infrastructure involved or the networking system and how it works. The interesting and applicable example for comparison would be electricity, where users have access to the service but don?t necessarily understand the systems and the component devices, which provide the service.
It is a model, which provides an environment where networks, applications, and storage can be shared by many users with minimum effort. This requires minimal service provider interaction and makes available the pooled computing sources, which can be shared on-demand. This capability to store information remotely opens many possibilities in small business. Without the need to keep programs and files stored locally, a person can now work from a phone, touch pad, or laptop from anywhere, and share their files with anyone else in the company. Cloud computing can also be used as a remote backup, storing an off-site copy of important documents in case data recovery is necessary for computer repair.
Since cloud computing providers deliver online business applications and IT infrastructures, these services can be used without investing a lot of resources. Especially helpful to small and medium businesses, these services have the potential to stop outsourcing by making in-house tasks more affordable, saving both time and money. Offering low up-front costs, complete customization, and IT support options, cloud computing is becoming a competitor in computer networking for small businesses.
This new platform is still an emerging technology, but will help to create a new generation of products and services. Many large companies are investing resources, building infrastructure and exploring the possibilities of cloud computing as a platform. Products and services that were not previously cost effective or viable options for many businesses will be available through these service providers. Sharing of pooled resources will enable users to build real-time connections, making project collaboration and business partnerships more efficient.
This revolutionary computer networking platform made possible by advancements in computer technology will eventually be commonplace in businesses of all sizes. Cloud computing has had a strong and promising beginning, and will most definitely have a lasting impact on business environment, business practices and productivity.

I think I?ll make this my first proper post here about selling online services to local businesses. I was sat there reading some of Lee Mcintyre?s teachings ( he?s the well known British non-Guru, guru, of making money online) and first of all I want you to know I?ve never in my life, up until this morning, read anything of his. I?ve just subscribed to his email list though and eagerly awaiting some more top tips.
But reading up on Lee and knowing he?s worked with and coached ?one of my?favorite?online marketers, Kim Roach (who?s I?ve spent some cash with), I know he can?t be talking out his rear end. The man has made a heck of a lot of money by teaching people sell knowledge online.
You?ll find one of the core things of Lee?s success is that he?s very giving of his knowledge for nothing. At some point though, like all online markers, he?s going to say, ?show me the money.? And people have readily done that.
Whilst I?ve sold things online that?s not really where my heart is. I?ve got to admit ? I spent two months not networking offline and my business which offers services to local businesses actually took a dip. The truth is there are thousands upon thousands of businesses who need to get online or know how to market online. They also need people like you and me to work for them on a regular basis as outsources etc. They are desperate and they don?t mind telling you they don?t know or don?t have time to get their marketing online going or deliver solutions for their clients. We?ll get to the businesses who don?t know what they want but know they want something on a later post, they are totally different kettle of fish to deal with.
So are you a local business marketing savior?
Let?s be clear what you?re doing here, on this website. You?re here because you either want to know different online marketing tips or you?re a consultant or coach who wants to offer online marketing services. Everyone else is just an innocent bystander ? but feel free to fill your boots with knowledge none the less.
Recently I was invited to attend a woman?s networking meeting run by Jo Cameron, who was a runner up in the UK version of The Apprentice. I still don?t know what Jo actually does but she ignited the meet-up with her energy and?enthusiasm?and that was enough to get me out of the funk I was in.
During that meeting I met another attendee who said they?d be interested in speaking to me about my business. Long story short we met up, got on like a house on fire and the lady I met is now patiently waiting for a proposal from me regarding social media packages. What this lady said to me during the meeting was something I?ve heard a lot from other clients, ?thank god I found you.? Well that?s nice to hear isn?t? So what made me her marketing savior?
I?ve recounted the key steps from meeting this lady at Jo?s event and the request for a proposal to work with me.
First off I actually went to the meeting. I could have said, no. I could have put it off but I didn?t. I was thinking about it because I actually had another?appointment?that day which meant I was cutting it a bit fine. But none the less. I went.
My 2 minute intro (which is kind of standard at these meetings) was quick and to the point. My name is?and I do this?
The lady who asked me for a one-to-one meeting did a talk. I went and congratulated her and asked her some more questions. I showed genuine interest in her business. I?d open the door to more conversation and she?intuitively?picked up on that.
During the one-to-one meeting, a few weeks later, I sat opposite it this lady and just let her tell me everything she needed to. I was not there to pitch. I was there to listen. During this time she asked me what I thought of different things. Again this wasn?t a pitch fest. I honestly told her what my opinion was on certain online marketing practices. I must confess that this lady does know her marketing stuff so if I?d have acted like I kind of knew but didn?t she would have picked up on it. Clearly I did know a thing or two so this set me up to be an authority in that topic. ?We both mutually shared knowledge and information. It was a lovely meeting. So much so that at the end she said she?d love to work with me and could I email her a proposal after she?d got back from holiday.
Can you do this?
Can you walk into a room of complete strangers and tell them who you are and what you do?
Can you approach business people of interest to you (without the intent of wanting to pitch) and just strike up a conversation.
Can you sit at a one-to-one meeting with someone and just listen while they tell you exactly what they need, want, or have a problem with.
Can you confidently offer your opinion on solutions and still not pitch.
Can you make a business owner feel they?ve found their marketing savior?
Let this sit with you because this is the core of your business as service provider for offline businesses. I?ll cover contracts, money and all that sort of stuff in other posts. This one is the core post for many of you who want to offer online services to local businesses. Let it sit and resonate with you.

Why every business marketing online needs an email list
Often overused and broad-reaching, the term strategic planning has become yet another one of those vague buzz phrases that get tossed about with little to no real understanding of what it means.? ?I?ve developed an Internet strategy that will make us millions.?? Simply electing to sell widgets on the Internet does not a business strategy make.? What is the marketplace?? Who are your competitors?? Who will buy your product?? These types of questions along with many, many more provide the foundation for developing a solid strategic plan.?
A successful business strategy is the combination of art and science. It turns a dynamic situation to your advantage to achieve your goals.? A business strategy must include a set of (frequently interdependent) decisions and actions that define a company?s self vision in the competitive marketplace and increase the probability of reaching clearly defined business objectives.? Put simply, it?s the plan to get from struggling start-up to successful venture.??
A basic business strategy addresses critical tasks including:
Developing the company?s mission
Identifying current resources and capabilities
Identifying external factors that affect the plan
Analyzing the Company?s options by considering its resources and the affects of the external environment
Identifying the most desirable options
Developing strategies that will achieve the most desired results.
Evaluating the success of the strategic process as stimulus to future decision-making.
One of the easiest traps to fall into is to forget the dynamic nature of the outside world.?? A fatal planning mistake is to build a business plan around a given set of static assumptions: the market is this, likely penetration is that; it will be sunny on Tuesday.? These assumptions seem reasonable and solid when the plan is made, but if any of them prove to be wrong, the plan will fail.???
Any effective business strategy must respond dynamically to the challenges posed by the firm?s immediate and remote external environments.? The immediate environment includes competitors, suppliers, increasingly scarce resources, government agencies and customers whose preferences often shift inexplicably.? The remote external environment comprises economic and social conditions, political priorities, and technological developments.? All of these must be anticipated, monitored, assessed, and incorporated iteratively into the strategic plan.? Sustainable competitive advantage results from strategies that contain real-time orientation.? Successful planning cannot rely solely on static and positional assumptions.?
So what goes into a strategic plan?? Well, start at the beginning and go from there.? This may sound simplistic, but you?d be surprised at the powerful business results you can achieve from carefully answering and acting on the following questions:
Where are we today? (Observe) What is the Company mission?? What are the available resources?? Who is the competition?? What is the market?
How will I get there? (Orient) What is the product?? What will it take to go from concept to market?? How many employees are needed to support the effort?? How will the company distribute the product?? How will the Company position the product in the market?? Develop options from observations.?
What are the Best Options (Decide) Based on the observations and the Company?s position in the market; management pursues the best options and develops a plan to pursue those options.
Implement the Plan (Action)? ? Execute.
Implicit in this process model, called Boyd?s OODA Loop, is the final step: Iterate.? This demands that you repeat the OODA process over time, and continually input real-time information.? Business success isn?t simply a matter of being quickest to market, of spending the most, or of selling the highest-quality products. A company may advance momentarily by any of these methods; but there is only one way to win over the long term: Outmaneuver the competition ? over and over, and over again.? Simply put, you have to understand the market before they do, act decisively, and constantly reassess to keep one step ahead.
Agility is the essence of strategy in war and in business.? Competitors are a company?s obvious opponents, but the ever-changing environment can have dramatic effects on a success of a business or sector.? For example, it wasn?t competition that hurt the telecom sector; it was external factors such as the economy and customer spending.
Boyd?s OODA Loop ?
Observe, Orient, Decide and Act.? Thoughtful agility is the essence of strategy in any conflict constrained by time and resources.? Any venture launching a new technology is fighting for time to market advantages over all the other entrants in the space.? All suppliers in a market segment are in a competition not only for customers but also for time, a precious commodity not voluntarily relinquished by any opponent ? in war or in business.?
Col John Boyd, USAF (Ret), coined the term and developed the concept of the ?OODA Loop? (Observation, Orientation, Decision, Action).?? According to Boyd?s theory, conflict can be seen as a series of time-competitive, Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action (OODA) cycles.?
The OODA Loop model comprises four major steps:
Observation: Collecting information about the current state of the market.
Orientation: Interpreting the information to evaluate and formulate options.
Decision: Analyzing the options, making a decision
Action: Executing the decision
Observation; Orientation; Decision; Action. Boyd?s model of tactical decision-making, provides an elegantly simple framework for creating competitive advantage.
The competitor who can consistently navigate Boyd?s Loop quicker than it?s rivals gains sustainable market advantage.? By the time the slower adversary reacts, the faster one is doing something different and the action becomes ineffective.? With each cycle, the slower competitor?s action causes them to fall further and further behind.?
The OODA loop demonstrates that strategy is never static.? Leading-edge companies understand that they must build an organization with fast response times in serving customers and preempting competitors, in order grow profitably.?
Fast-response companies not only have marketing advantages, they also tend to discover lower cost structures; by moving production materials and information through a company?s operation quickly, they collect less overhead and don?t accumulate inventory. Fast-response companies also innovate more effectively because they don?t waste time and resources on unsuccessful or unproductive ideas: more new products can be conceived and engineered in a given period, creating more market opportunities by giving customers more choices.
The evolving global market coupled with continuing advances in real-time communication and information technology has led to the reinvention of the meaning and practice of strategy. What do you do in competitive market where the time advantage of proprietary technology is collapsing, even as the cost of developing it explodes? Companies in manufacturing, telecommunications, retail ? in just about every business ? are discovering that fashion, fad, and fickle customers require constant vigilance and adjustment.? In a fast paced world where time is money, information is at our fingertips, and the rules of the game are constantly changing, the OODA loop is more strategically powerful than ever.
Want to out-think and out-execute the competition in the air, on the ground, in combat or in business? Want to test out new ideas, get feedback from your customers, adjust your product accordingly, and launch a new version ? before your competition even senses the opportunity? Then learn how to make the OODA loop the centerpiece of your strategy process.
