The Making of New American Gospel (Adler Publishing)

While busy working on the next LAMB OF GOD record and performing clinics all over the country, drummer extraordinaire Chris Adler has put out his first in series of instructional books. Subtitled ?Drum Tablature, Short Stories and Reflections? Adler ultimately hopes to put out a book for every release the band has had. All of the materials are culled from his memories, journals and most of all the music itself. This edition details the formation of the band, their rise in the underground as BURN THE PRIEST and the recording of LoG?s breakthrough first album under their now more famous moniker.
After a lengthy introduction about his own path to the drum throne, Adler discusses the formation of the band and how they came to sign with Prosthetic Records originally. The perilous recording process for New American Gospel is unveiled and Adler talks very openly about the difficulties and pressures that weighed heavily on him and the group as a whole. His candor is refreshing and he goes out of his way to accept blame and show humility at all times. He goes on in finely detailed entries, song by song about how each was composed and recorded. The insights he discloses are invaluable, not just about the band, but about his playing and will be a real boon to drummers who normally just get relegated to the DVD lesson realm.

My personal favorite chapters besides the introduction are ?Black Label?, ?The Black Dahlia?, ?Pariah? and ?Confessional?. Along the way ?he talks about his drum set up at the time, choice of gear, drumming philosophy and reveals all of his favorite techniques and tricks (for example how to perfect his signature bit, the double kick triplet). Having played bass guitar in metal bands in high school, Adler started to apply guitar ideas to drums which is why his playing may have a distinctly ?lead? sound to it at times. In addition to this each track is expertly transcribed by the author and Travis Orbin, complete with his drum tuning for the album. There are also some phenomenal photographs, many of them intimate ones taken by Chris?s wife Julie which adds to the value. For fans of his drumming or simply metal drummers looking to improve their chops in general I feel the studious and honest approach of the writing would be helpful. I am looking forward to collecting the entire series in time. You can purchase the book directly from Chris here.
